Working in Recycling is Not A Trashy Job
Putting the recycling bin on the curb for pick up is just the beginning of the materials recycling process. Once picked up, all that stuff is taken to a material resource facility (MRF) to be sorted, condensed and reworked into life as a completely different product. What a MRF does is important: it helps the environment, protects the planet, and is a responsible use of resources.
Recycling work isn’t glamorous, but it’s important to filling the larger needs of our society. It’s important to you as a job seeker because it takes people – the right people with the attitude and skills to start and stick with this growing field. How do you know if recycling is right for you?
There’s No “I” in Team
The recycling process is never a one-person job. It takes coordination and teamwork. The work appeals to people who like spending time with others and feeling like a valuable contributor. If you’re used to more individual work, then a position in a MRF may not be the best fit.
Do You Get Car Sick?
This seems like a strange question, but it’s crucial when thinking about working at a MRF. That’s because at a MRF, recyclables are transitioned on a conveyor belt where they are to be sorted. Some people say that working on the conveyor belt system creates a similar feeling as being motion sick or car sick. If you become car sick easily, you may not enjoy this work.
Keep Your Head on a Swivel
Are you committed to being safe on the job? Most people will say “yes,” because it’s the obvious answer. But in a modern MRF, staying safe is critical. These recycling facilities are fast-paced with complex machinery. The job requires a constant attention to detail and to what’s going on around you. All employees need to be educated and well-trained to ensure the safety of everyone on the team.
