Manufacturing Job Interview Tips

Do manufacturing interviews make you nervous? If you are, you aren’t alone. Interviews can be daunting, and if you don’t perform well, the chances of you getting hired will be very low. If you dread job interviews, here are some ways to make the experience a bit easier.

Act Interested

Let’s be honest – interviews are not always the most exciting events, but interviewers will expect you to be interested in what they are discussing. During the interview, maintain eye contact and participate in the discussion. Every interviewer has a different style, and some may prefer to make “small talk” before jumping into serious interview questions. Whatever your interviewer wants to discuss, listen and respond as if you are genuinely interested.

Research the Company Beforehand

Do you research companies before you go to interviews? Many people do not; however, more than likely, your interviewer will ask you “What do you know about us?” You don’t want to be caught off guard, and if you don’t have an answer prepared, it may appear that you are uninterested in the job and company. Research the following aspects of a company before interviewing:

  • Vision and goals
  • History
  • Culture
  • Values

You can easily get this information by visiting a company’s website and taking a few notes.

Dress for the job you want…not the job you have.

Even though you will not be working in office garb, you will need to dress professionally for an interview in the manufacturing industry. Always wear a dress shirt, pants or skirt. Neutral colors are best, and if you can’t decide what to wear, colors such as brown, black, white, navy blue, dark green and gray will suffice. Although it can be tempting, avoid wearing strongly scented perfumes, lotions or colognes – the interviewer may be allergic.
